Not so fast... let's take this one step at a time

Don’t let your stairs be a step in the wrong direction! Take steps now to avoid a misstep later.

Climbing stairs might be the best exercise you get all day.  Navigating stairs requires coordination and spatial awareness and strengthens your legs, hips, and core, which are crucial for maintaining mobility and balance.  Even a few flights of stairs can elevate your heart rate, improving circulation and endurance.

But stairs can also pose risks if not approached with care. Here are a few tips to make stairs safer...

dusk to dawn nightlight

Use <a type="url" href="" target="_blank" data-runtime-url="">πŸ”—smart nightlightnear the top and bottom of stairs that light up automatically at night so you are never in the dark as you approach the stairs.

bright LED lightbulb

Use πŸ”—bright overhead LED lightbulbs to avoid shadows on stairs and stairwells ensuring that each step is seen clearly.

stair edge trim

πŸ”—Mark edges with contrasting trim to help see steps clearly.  Simple colored tape is all it takes to create a clear delineation of the edge of the step.

stair handrail, railing

Install a πŸ”—sturdy handrail on your stairs and check it regularly to ensure it is secure.  Consider a handrail on both side of the stairs if your stairwell is between 3 and 4 feet wide so you can double up on your grip.

stair treds to reduce slipping

Install πŸ”—stair treads or carpeting to reduce slipperiness on stairs.  Simple self-adhesive stair treads are affordable and easy to install. With so many colors and styles they don't have to detract from your style.

clutter on stairs, books on stairs

Remove clutter from the stairs that you or your loved one could trip on.  Put books, shoes and other items away and avoid decorative baskets or plants on the stairs that can impede access up and down the stairs.

slippers, bare feet

Always wear πŸ”—proper footwear with non-slip soles when walking around the house, particularly when using the stairs, and never walk in stocking feet which can be VERY slippery.

home stair lift

You should use the stairs every chance you get, but if you need to have a backup plan for days when you just can't get to the top on your own, consider installing a πŸ”—stair lift. That said, even if you have a stair lift installed, remember to walk up and down the stairs on your own as often as possible for exercise and only use the lift when necessary.
